Happiness. Wisdom. Understanding. How do we find it in such a chaotic world right now? Most days it feels so far away. Some days it feels like it’s right within our reach but it keeps slipping through our fingers. Some days we crush it. My friend has a practice where she flips her Bible open to a random verse in Proverbs to see what God is saying in that moment. I had one of those days where wisdom and understanding kept slipping through my grasp so I took her advice and flipped it open. Proverbs 3:13-19 were highlighted so my eyes were drawn to it.

“Happy is a man who finds wisdom and who acquires understanding, for she is more profitable than silver, and her revenue is better than gold. She is more precious than jewels; nothing you desire can equal her.”

Proverbs 3:13-15

In my CSB Bible, I had circled the words she and her over and over again in this highlighted passage. SHE is more profitable than silver. HER revenue is better than gold. SHE is more precious than jewels. So often we use these verses as a feel-good, pick me up, positive affirmations for women. But the SHE/HER in this does not refer to a person. It’s referring to the WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING that is acquired.

Wisdom and Understanding are profitable.

Yes, wisdom and understanding are worth more than gold. They are more precious than jewels. Wisdom is what we need to be seeking in this chaotic world. And it’s hard to do. It’s really hard to do. But what this scripture continues to say about wisdom and understanding makes me what to keep seeking it.

Long life is in her right hand; and her left, riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant, and all her paths, peaceful. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who hold on to her are happy.

Proverbs 3:16-18

This applies to all believers.

I have a shortlist of who I feel believers are and I talked about it here. When I read about this rich wisdom and great understanding I hope you know that it doesn’t just apply to a man. It’s not literal. It applies to all of us believers. And this ‘man’ who finds wisdom and acquires understanding is actively pursuing it. Wisdom doesn’t find him. He finds it. He is active. He’s seeking it out. He’s going after it day after day. Through the chaos. Through the crazy. Through whatever this world brings him next. Why? Because the riches tied to wisdom are heavenly and immeasurable. Seek it out. Find it.
